“Paying the Price” - Rendered homeless by his own carelessness after burning his house down, Frost takes on a kidnapping case with the help of WPC Claire Toms. A 24-hour operation at the victim’s flat leads to escalating demands from the kidnapper and even Frost finds it difficult to keep cool under the pressure.

“Unknown Soldiers” - Frost finds himself staring down the barrel of a gun when he interviews a suspected drug dealer and then finds himself confronted by an armed robbery. But, he’s far more intrigud by the death of a young soldier at an army camp. It’s strictly off limits to police, but that has never stopped Frost before.

“Fun Times for Swingers” - Frost encounters the world of male escorts in this episode but he has a rude introduction when a naked woman throws herself from the roof of Denton Church. Frost uncovers a snapshot of a man with whom she had an affair, but the next day the man himself is found murdered.

“The Things We Do for Love” - The savage murder of a young physiotherapist sends Frost in pursuit of the names in her electronic organizer. The prime suspect is a pillar of the local church, but Frost’s conviction that he is the killer is refuted by a water-tight alibi.

“Deep Waters” - Frost is determined to make two suspects confess after a vicious knife attack, but an adversarial solicitor points out that justice has to be done despite what Frost’s instinct tells him. That aside, can he trust his hunch about a mysterious assailant at the local university… or not?

William Castle’s gimmick-laden comic thriller is not so much a horror movie as a fairground funhouse come to life. Vincent Price stars as a deliciously silky millionaire married to a greedy gold digger (Carol Ohmart) who refuses to divorce him. When he turns his wife’s idea for a haunted-house party into a contest–$10,000 to whoever will spend the night in “the only truly haunted house in the world”–it seems he may have found an alternative to divorce. Five strangers gather to test their stamina, Price hands each of them delightfully twisted party favors (loaded handguns, delivered in their own tiny coffins), and the spook show begins. Blood drips from the ceiling, zombielike apparitions float through rooms, severed heads and skeletons suddenly appear, and then a gust is found hanging in the stairwell. Full of screams and things that go bump in the night, House on Haunted Hill isn’t particularly scary and often makes little sense, but, like a Halloween haunted house, the spectacle of spook-show cliches is quite entertaining, and Price makes a sardonic master of ceremonies. The original theatrical presentations featured a typically outrageous Castle-engineered gimmick: Emergo, which was nothing more than a skeleton that appeared to fly out of the screen and over the audience on a guide wire. –Sean Axmaker

To change the formula a bit, Serving Sara puts Perry in a slightly scruffier mode, and pairs him with an actress whose sexiness and comic aplomb should be a good counterpart to his wonderfully shticky style: Elizabeth Hurley. And it still doesn’t work. This one is set in the exciting world of process-serving, where Perry teams up with jilted wife Hurley to sting her rich husband (reliable goof Bruce Campbell). This screwball plot might have worked if the two stars evinced any chemistry together, and if director Reginald Hudlin knew how to set up a scene. Bright spot: Cedric the Entertainer, as Perry’s boss, gets laughs just from doing the tiniest bits of business while seated behind his desk. No small thing in a movie that otherwise labors. –Robert Horton
